SEMINAR DESCRIPTION:

This seminar will focus on some common misconceptions and errors in interpretation of data, as well as touch upon issues related to analysis and presentation of data. It will address common questions such as: How can I best present my data? What does this p-value really mean? How big of a sample do I need? In addition, simple explanations of some common statistical concepts will be provided, and ideas for how to better display various types of data in tables and graphs will be discussed.

SESSION LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Participants will come away with a better understanding of general statistical concepts and their use in scientific reporting.

SESSION SPEAKERS:

Dr. Andrea Kim
Dr. Andrea Kim is currently the Deputy Chief of Science at the International Laboratory Branch in the Division of Global HIV/AIDS, Center for Global Health, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia. She has served as a reviewer for numerous publications and conference proceedings, presented over 50 abstracts in international and domestic conferences, and authored over 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals. Andrea holds a Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of California at Berkeley (2003), a Masters in Public Health in Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases from Yale University (1998), and a Bachelors degree in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from the University of California Los Angeles (1996).
